Well, Ratchet was an action movie in a time when action (comic book) movies reign supreme, and it just wasn't up to snuff. Sly will be a heist film; when was the last heist film you saw? With me, it was Inception (which set a pretty high standard, of course) but as for a family-friendly heist film, I don't think I've ever seen one. Sly has nothing to compete with, so I think it will be better than Ratchet no matter what.
The last family friendly hiest film was "The Nutjob" which didn't well do either and wasn't released a long time ago (Read, one to two years ago I'm thinking)...
