Hopefully this thread isn't too old, but there are ways to customize these new infoboxes ("portable" is what wikia calls them) via wikiwide css. There is a help page about it :Help:Portable_infoboxes/CSS. I'm not sure if you'll be able to do what was mentioned above above but it definitely will help make the boxes more customizable.
