Coins are the currency in the Sly Cooper series. They can be acquired throughout the games and are primarily used to purchase power-ups. With the exception of the coins that can be found lying on the ground (as in the first game), they disappear after a short amount of time unless collected, spinning faster with the passing seconds before disappearing with a sparkle. If Coin Magnetism or Coopergiwa's Gold Magnet have been obtained, coins will be collected from a large distance away from the character. If not, a coin can only be collected if they are touched with a character's body or hit with their weapon (e.g., Sly Cooper's cane).

Coins first appear in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, where they are used in 100 coin intervals to earn Lucky Charms. If 100 coins are collected and Sly has no charm, a silver charm will be given. With 100 more coins, a gold charm will be given. As long as Sly has a gold charm, every 100 coins will earn him another life. Coins can be collected by finding them laying on the ground, destroying objects or defeating enemies.

From Sly 2: Band of Thieves on, coins are used to purchase power-ups from ThiefNet via Bentley's laptop. Coins can be collected by pickpocketing, selling loot, destroying objects, and (if an enemy's pocket has not been completely picked), by defeating said enemy. Loot has to be manually sold via ThiefNet in Sly 2, but in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, loot is automatically sold.

Trivia

  • Coins seem to be used as the primary currency all over the world. They also appear throughout history, such as in 10,000 BC Australia,[1] 1001 AD Arabia,[2] and many other periods.[3]
  • Coins disappear much faster in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus than they do in the following games.
  • If Sly wields Ratchet's Wrench in Thieves in Time, coins are replaced by bolts, the currency in the Ratchet & Clank video game series. The bolts also appear to be worth twice as much as coins.
  • In the Sly 2 episode, "A Starry Eyed Encounter," if the player spends a long pick-pocketing guards or breaking objects, coins will eventually stop appearing.
