Bentley: Look, we're only going to get one shot at this, so we can't mess up!
Sly: Alright, no messing up allowed. Now stop worrying! This is gonna be a piece of cake.

"I Smell a Rat" is a job for Sly Cooper, Bentley and Murray in the prologue of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

Background

With the Cooper Gang reunited, they plan to pull off a heist that involves breaking into a museum in Paris to find a 17th-century samurai dagger that would help them travel back in time.

Synopsis

After Bentley regroups the gang and explains the situation to them, they arrive at the museum to begin the heist. The trio exit the Cooper Van and take their posts as planned — Sly to the roof, Bentley to the sewers beneath and Murray to the back alley.

Murray surfing on a rat trooper truck

Sly is the one to commence the operation by running along the rooftops while encountering several security choppers. As he walks across a rope connecting two buildings, he spots Murray riding on the top of a truck and questions whether that is part of Murray's entrance strategy. However, Bentley has no idea what Sly is talking about, stating that Murray's approach route is through the back alley. Sly, seeing that Murray has made it to his planned position anyway, continues on.

Sly hiding from a security chopper

After a close call with a security chopper, Sly approaches a wire that leads directly to the roof. He uses his cane to zip-line across the wire, allowing him to access a pole on the side of the museum. As Sly ascends the pole, it bends under his weight and tipped over. However, it is stopped by the edge of the building. Bentley advises Sly to find another way to the roof. While making his way around the side of the museum, Sly passes by the window of a room where an unknown figure and two others[note 1] were talking. Sly then climbs to the roof of the museum.

Sly then has to head for the skylight on the roof, which is guarded by a rat trooper guard. This provides Sly with the opportunity to pull off an act of pickpocketing. After stealing the key from the guard and stealth killing him, Sly uses the key to unlock the skylight. This is where he will be able to drop down and retrieve the dagger, which is in the room right below. However, Bentley needs to shut off the security surrounding the artifact.

Bentley entering the control center

Underground, Bentley is informed that Sly is in position by the skylight and proceeds to make his way through the sewers,[note 2] bombing various pieces of machinery blocking his path and jumping across several gaps. Eventually, he finds the entrance to the museum's security system. He bombs it and jumped through, barely stopping himself above a laser grid. He swings himself over the grid and reaches the security control center. After dealing with the guards keeping watch, Bentley hacks into the museum's database and opens the museum's gate, that way Murray could proceed with his task.

Murray surrounded by rat troopers

Murray enters the museum grounds and is immediately attacked by guards. He uses his mighty strength to quickly dispose of each one and reach the museum's warehouse. As he enters, he finds a single guard waiting for him. Suddenly, the door to the warehouse closes behind him, and several guards come out and pounce on him, tackling him to the ground. Though the guards seemed to be overpowering him for a moment, Murray is able to shake all the guards off of him in one swing, taking them all out in the process. His task here is to destroy the junction boxes connected to the security system. Once that is done, Bentley is able to shut down the security surrounding the samurai dagger.

Carmelita catching Sly in the act

Sly drops through the skylight and steals the dagger, leaving a calling card in its place. As he is about to exit, an angry Carmelita Fox barged into the room. Seeing that Sly has seemingly turned back to his old ways, Carmelita attempted to capture him but failed as usual. Sly quickly makes his way back to the van where Bentley and Murray are waiting. As they make their escape, they are surrounded by several security vehicles. After driving furiously through the museum garden, they use a ramp to drive over the fence and onto the street. Before they can make the final escape through time, Bentley tells Sly to place the dagger into the receptacle. Once done, Murray punched the pedal, and the gang drove off and disappeared in plain sight, leaving for Feudal Japan.

Notes

  1. Revealed to be Cyrille Le Paradox, Miss Decibel and Toothpick.
  2. When Bentley enters the sewers, he says: "Interesting. Last time I was in these sewers, I was just a teenager!" This is a reference to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise; the characters are turtles (like Bentley) that live in a sewer.
